Flood Risk Activity Permit Solutions
Untitled Practice / Thames Waterfront Development

The Brief:

Untitled Practice approached Urban Water with a critical need for a Flood Risk Activity Permit to develop a waterfront park alongside the Thames in London. The proposed location, near a flood defence, meant stringent environmental regulations had to be met to secure the necessary approvals. Without this permit, the project would face significant delays or even cancellation.

Urban Water stepped in by providing support in obtaining a Bespoke Flood Risk Activity Permit, which involved thoroughly reviewing the contractor’s risk management systems. Additionally, we assessed the Construction Environmental Management Plan and crafted statements for the permit application. These were essential to demonstrate to the Environment Agency that the development would not harm the flood defences or compromise the river’s environmental integrity.

Why Untitled Practice chose Urban Water:

Untitled Practice selected Urban Water because of our proven ability to navigate complex environmental regulations with efficiency and accuracy. Having worked with us on a previous project, they were familiar with our ability to manage the critical aspects of the permit application and ensure compliance with all relevant flood risk regulations.

The process of obtaining a Flood Risk Activity Permit is intricate, requiring both in-depth technical knowledge and experience in regulatory affairs. Untitled Practice recognised that they needed expert guidance to avoid potential pitfalls, and Urban Water’s comprehensive approach assured them that the project would be handled professionally and within the required timeline.

The Challenge:

One of the primary challenges of this project was managing communication with multiple stakeholders, particularly the Environment Agency. Given the site’s location, any concerns about flood defences and environmental impact had to be addressed meticulously to move the permit application forward. Proximity to the Thames flood defence added complexity, as access to the area might be required for future maintenance vehicles, which had to be accounted for in the development plans.

In addition to these logistical challenges, we had to ensure that all construction activities complied with environmental regulations. The balance between adhering to safety and environmental standards and meeting project deadlines required careful planning and coordination among all involved parties. Our team worked tirelessly to ensure the project stayed on track despite these challenges.

The Urban Water Difference:

What sets Urban Water apart is our ability to anticipate and manage complexities before they become roadblocks. We expedited the early stages of the permit process by providing the Environment Agency with preliminary information, allowing them to give valuable feedback early on. By leveraging our bank of data, templates, and models, we were able to quickly adapt existing documentation, reducing delays and keeping the project on schedule.

Our close collaboration with the contractors was instrumental in streamlining the process. We provided them with clear guidance on the documentation and information needed to meet the Environment Agency’s requirements, facilitating smooth communication and ensuring that everyone involved remained aligned with the project’s goals. This proactive approach was key to overcoming the regulatory hurdles.

The Outcome:

Thanks to Urban Water’s expertise and proactive handling of the process, the Flood Risk Activity Permit was granted without any significant delays. Our ability to navigate the complex regulatory landscape enabled Untitled Practice to proceed with its development as planned. We not only met the stringent requirements of the Environment Agency but also ensured that the project was executed with minimal disruption to the surrounding area.

We look forward to continuing our partnership with Untitled Practice, confident that our collaborative efforts will lead to more successful projects in the future. This case highlights Urban Water’s ability to turn regulatory challenges into opportunities for growth, all while ensuring smooth and efficient project management.
